Our Story

The story begins in the 1960s in the Salt Lake City area, where a young man—known to his colleagues as “Jonesy”—came across someone making a curious little snack. Intrigued, Jonesy learned enough about the process to tuck the idea away for the future.

Around that same time, similar snacks known as Wheat Nuts or "Whuts" were being produced locally in Utah. They became a familiar favorite throughout the Mountain West and remained popular until the late 1980s.

Jonesy’s journey eventually led him and his wife to Colorado, where they raised their family. During those years, he began producing his own version of the snack under the name "Trigos", giving family members opportunities to help with the business. What started in a small Colorado town reached farther than expected, earning the love of many who discovered it.

In the 1990s, Jonesy shared his dream and vision with his children. While life brought challenges that slowed the growth of the business, he never stopped refining his craft, working tirelessly to bring the product close to perfection. Sadly, Jonesy passed away in 2002 after a battle with leukemia, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and cherished memories within his community.

Over the years, some of us continued his dream in different ways, ultimately leading to the launch of WHUTZ. Since August 2024, WHUTZ has been proudly offering this beloved treat in the Salt Lake City area, meeting wonderful people along the way. Many customers have shared their own memories—who introduced them to the snack, or the local shops where they used to buy it across Utah and neighboring states. Some enjoyed Jonesy’s wheat as children and are now rediscovering it decades later, prepared by the next generation.

WHUTZ is excited to bring this product full circle, back to its roots in Utah. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. We look forward to continuing Jonesy’s dream—sharing a quality product that builds connections from one generation to the next.
